Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has intensified calls for the resignation of Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, citing what it describes as a series of failures that compromised the integrity of the 2026 general elections.
According to the ULS’ newly released election observation report, the polls were marred by violence, administrative irregularities, and interference from security agencies, preventing citizens from exercising their constitutional rights freely.
Among the key issues highlighted were last-minute candidate de-nominations without proper legal recourse, malfunctioning Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVKs), and uneven enforcement of election regulations, raising questions about the EC’s impartiality and competence.
“We cannot stand by while the EC fails to uphold constitutional standards. Justice Byabakama must step down and face the consequences,” said Eddie Nangulu, a member of the ULS council. Vice President Anthony Asiimwe stressed that electoral fairness cannot be sacrificed under the guise of national security.
While the ULS urges accountability, the EC maintains that all actions were within its legal mandate, with spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi encouraging stakeholders to pursue court-based challenges if dissatisfied.
The report has sparked renewed discussions on reforming Uganda’s electoral system, with legal and political analysts calling for greater transparency and stricter oversight of EC operations.
