Luweero, Uganda | July 17, 2026 — Police have arrested two health workers at Luweero General Hospital over allegations that they demanded Shs700,000 from the family of a patient before offering medical assistance.
The suspects, Rebecca Nakiwala, an orthopaedic officer, and Margaret Nabikolo, were arrested after the patient’s relatives reported that they had been asked to pay money while seeking treatment at the hospital.
Police said the complaint involved a woman who had been admitted to the facility with a deep cut on her right leg after an alleged domestic violence incident.
According to investigators, the family was asked to provide the money before the patient could receive the required medical attention.
The family reportedly managed to raise Shs300,000, which was allegedly handed over before police intervened.
Officers later arrested the two health workers and recovered the money, which will be used as evidence in the ongoing case.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twineamazima confirmed the arrest, saying investigations are underway.
A case of extortion has been registered at Luweero Central Police Station.
The incident comes amid continued government efforts to address corruption and unethical practices in public health facilities.
Over the years, patients and their relatives have raised concerns about being asked for unofficial payments for services that should be provided within government hospitals.
Health authorities have repeatedly warned medical workers against demanding money from patients, saying such actions violate professional standards and contribute to loss of public confidence in healthcare institutions.
Luweero General Hospital serves as a key government health facility for residents of Luweero District and surrounding communities, many of whom depend on public hospitals for affordable medical care.
Police have encouraged patients and members of the public to report similar cases, saying accountability is essential in improving service delivery.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
