Buddo, Wakiso District — Buddo’s local economy is experiencing a growing presence of small service-based enterprises, particularly in branding and printing, as demand rises from schools, community groups, and small businesses. Analysts say this trend reflects broader economic shifts in the area, where urban expansion and increased commercial activity are creating opportunities for micro and small-scale service providers.
Owned by entrepreneur Kato Joram Howard, Howard Gift Hub Branding and Printing Centre is one of the recent entrants in this emerging sector, offering services locally that previously required travel to larger towns.
Local traders and community members have welcomed the emergence of such enterprises. A small trader in Buddo noted:
“When you don’t have to travel to Kampala for banners or branded shirts, it saves time and money. That matters to us.”
At the district level, Wakiso Commercial Officer James Musaazi highlighted the economic importance of small businesses:
“Supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises is central to improving household incomes and expanding inclusive economic participation.”
Economists point out that while small enterprises like Howard Gift Hub provide crucial services and create employment, they often face challenges such as high operating costs, limited access to finance, and competition from informal operators. Treasury Secretary Ramathan Ggoobi recently said:
“Uganda is a global hotspot for entrepreneurs, but many start-ups remain informal and miss out on opportunities such as government contracts and other incentives available to formalised enterprises.”
Small service businesses also contribute to skills development in graphic design, digital printing, and customer service. Analysts note that their sustainability depends on supportive infrastructure, financial inclusion, and access to business development services.
As Buddo continues to urbanise and commercial activity grows, enterprises like Howard Gift Hub are expected to remain central to the local economy, providing essential services, supporting livelihoods, and shaping the community’s economic future.
