Security has maintained a full-time presence at former speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among’s residence and controls all visits.
An undercover visit by our reporter established that Among is not held in complete isolation, as per social media speculation, as select visitors, either cleared by Among or security, are allowed in the Nakasero residence.
Former Kampala Central MP Mohammed Nsereko had claimed that Among was suffering from health complications and had limited access to specialised medical care. We observed multiple layers of security at the residence on Mackinnon Road, including personnel from the Special Forces Command (SFC), Counter Terrorism Police and plain-clothed security operatives, all of whom screened visitors before allowing entry.
When the reporter sought access, security officers said only visitors whose names had been cleared in advance by Among or those inside the residence were being admitted. Without prior authorisation, the reporter was denied entry and advised to seek clearance before returning.
The observations indicate that access to the residence is being tightly regulated rather than completely prohibited. During the visit, security personnel allowed a Toyota Noah to enter the compound without delay. Shortly afterwards, Amuru Woman MP Lucy Akello and another visitor were cleared to enter after routine security checks.
The findings are consistent with remarks by Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere, who recently told us that he attended a prayer session at Among’s residence together with a Catholic priest and other leaders.
According to Okwere, family members and selected visitors have continued to access the residence despite the heightened security. The restricted access has fuelled speculation about Among’s health and circumstances following dramatic political developments after the 2026 general election.
Nsereko has alleged, without presenting medical evidence, that Among is suffering from swollen legs caused by a blood clot and requires specialised treatment. Acting Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) national coordinator Alice Alaso has also said the former Speaker has experienced health challenges, although she declined to disclose further details.
The government has not publicly explained the continued security deployment at Among’s residence following operations in which her fleet of vehicles was impounded and taken to Naguru police headquarters.
Among, who served as speaker of parliament from 2022 until the expiry of the 11th parliament and remains the NRM’s second national vice chairperson (female), has made few public appearances since security agencies moved against her shortly after President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in, leaving unanswered questions about her health, political future and freedom of movement
