Yesterday marked the official launch of the ONE Data Agent, a groundbreaking platform developed in partnership with Google that combines the power of artificial intelligence with human expertise to unlock trusted health financing data. The event brought together global leaders in technology and advocacy, underscoring the strategic role of data in shaping equitable healthcare systems worldwide.

The ONE Data Agent is the first-of-its-kind tool designed to rapidly search through tens of millions of scattered data points and deliver reliable, actionable insights in seconds. By tapping into Google’s Data Commons, the platform democratizes access to high-quality public data, allowing users to explore, compare, and act on information with unprecedented ease.

For journalists, think tank analysts, NGOs, and policymakers, this tool is especially powerful. Instead of spending hours collecting and verifying datasets from fragmented sources, users can now simply pose natural language questions, visualize results in charts, and download data complete with metadata. This not only accelerates research but also ensures evidence-based advocacy and policy decisions.

The demonstration was led by:

  • David McNair, ONE’s Executive Director for Global Policy & Strategy
  • Prem Ramaswami, Head of Google Data Commons
  • Jorge Rivera, ONE’s Data Director

Together, they highlighted how the platform simplifies complex queries by merging data from sources such as the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database and the OECD Credit Reporting System. What would normally take hours or even days to compile can now be achieved in moments.

In an era where misinformation spreads quickly, trust in data is more critical than ever. The ONE Data Agent addresses this challenge by ensuring that every data point comes from a reliable source, eliminating the hallucination risk often associated with AI tools. This provides advocates with instant, fact-based insights, crucial for debates on issues like healthcare equity and financing.

David McNair emphasized that this innovation is not just a technological leap but also a strategic one. By removing the friction of data access, activists and policymakers can focus on what matters most: using credible evidence to push for change.

According to Google’s Data Commons team, the roadmap for the ONE Data Agent includes:

  • Increased data granularity: Moving beyond national-level statistics to sub-national data where possible.
  • Direct country-level data collection: Enhancing timeliness and accuracy by sourcing data straight from governments and institutions.
  • Automated reporting: Prototypes are already in development to generate full reports and stories from data, complete with summaries, charts, and narratives, all with zero hallucination risk.

This partnership is not just about data; it’s about empowering voices. Particularly for Africa, where reliable data is often underrepresented in global platforms, the ONE Data Agent helps ensure more equitable visibility and representation.

The launch of the ONE Data Agent powered by Google Commons represents a major step forward in making data universally accessible, reliable, and actionable. By combining AI’s speed with human expertise and oversight, the platform is set to amplify the impact of advocates, researchers, and decision-makers around the world.

As global challenges grow increasingly complex, tools like the ONE Data Agent remind us that the future of advocacy and policy lies in trusted data and collaborative innovation.
