NWOYA DISTRICT, UGANDA — Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation following a fatal crash involving a Nile Star Bus that left four people dead on the spot in Nwoya District.
Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed the deaths, describing the incident as one of the more serious road crashes recorded in the area in recent months. He said several other passengers were injured and are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.
“The driver has been arrested and is in custody to assist police with investigations into the cause of the crash,” Kananura stated.
According to preliminary police findings, the bus is suspected to have lost control before the crash, though investigators have not ruled out other contributing factors such as excessive speed, driver fatigue, or possible mechanical failure. A technical inspection of the vehicle is underway, alongside witness interviews and scene reconstruction.
Residents who arrived shortly after the crash described a devastating scene, with parts of the bus extensively damaged and passengers trapped inside. Local community members joined security personnel in rescue efforts, helping to pull survivors from the wreckage before emergency services transported the injured to medical facilities.
The incident has once again exposed persistent weaknesses in the regulation of Uganda’s public transport sector. Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that gaps in enforcement—particularly around driver conduct, vehicle roadworthiness, and operational oversight—continue to put passengers at risk.
In recent years, long-distance bus companies have come under scrutiny following a series of fatal accidents, prompting calls for stricter monitoring systems, including mandatory speed governors, digital tracking of driver hours, and tougher penalties for violations.
Police have urged transport operators to prioritise safety over profit, emphasising the importance of routine vehicle inspections and adherence to traffic laws. Passengers, too, are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report reckless driving through available police channels.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify the deceased and notify their families. A comprehensive report is expected to be released once inquiries are complete, which could inform further legal action against those found responsible.
The Nwoya crash adds to Uganda’s growing road safety crisis, reinforcing urgent calls for reforms aimed at preventing avoidable loss of life on the country’s highways.
