National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Nalukoola has once again defeated the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Faridah Nambi to retain the Kawempe North parliamentary seat, winning by a commanding margin.
According to Kampala district returning officer Rashid Hashakya, Nalukoola polled more than 34,000 votes, while Nambi secured about 8,900 votes, almost identical to her performance in last year’s by-election for the same seat. The result gives Nalukoola a victory margin of nearly 25,000 votes.
The tallying process was marked by heightened tension, with both candidates accusing each other of vote rigging. Security was reinforced at the tally centre as supporters from the rival camps traded threats, raising fears of possible violence.
Nalukoola’s victory further strengthens the NUP’s grip on the capital, giving the party seven of the 10 elective positions in Kampala. The remaining three seats are held by the NRM.
In the previous parliamentary elections, the NUP secured nine of Kampala’s 10 seats. However, in the current electoral cycle, the party has lost two seats to the ruling NRM.
