KAMPALA, May 25, 2026 — A near-unanimous vote by delegates at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Delegates Conference has elevated Jacob Oboth-Oboth to the position of Speaker, underscoring his strong backing within the ruling party’s ranks.

The election, held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Monday, saw Oboth secure 441 votes out of 519 ballots cast, making him the clear choice of delegates gathered for the party’s highest organ.

The vote was notable for its high turnout and minimal invalid ballots. Conference officials reported that no delegates abstained from the exercise, while only three ballots were spoiled during counting.

Oboth election places him in charge of moderating debates and guiding proceedings at a conference expected to make important decisions on the party’s future direction. The Speaker’s role is crucial in ensuring orderly discussions and managing contributions from hundreds of delegates representing different regions and party structures.

His victory comes as the NRM seeks to consolidate its internal structures and chart a course for the years ahead. The National Delegates Conference serves as the party’s supreme decision-making platform, bringing together leaders from across Uganda to debate policies, review party affairs and adopt resolutions.

The commanding margin by which Oboth won is likely to be interpreted by many within the party as a sign of unity behind his leadership at the conference, as delegates prepare to tackle a packed agenda.
