Kampala, Uganda: The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nakawa has granted bail to a group of National Unity Platform (NUP) polling agents who were arrested during the January 15, 2026 elections.

The agents were reportedly detained on polling day after being removed from various voting stations where they had been deployed as party representatives.

According to their legal team, the arrests occurred while the agents were lawfully monitoring the voting process in line with their duties.

During a court session held this morning, defence lawyers argued that the polling agents had been unjustly detained and did not pose any risk to ongoing investigations or court proceedings.

The presiding magistrate granted them bail, paving the way for their temporary release as investigations and legal proceedings continue.

Lawyers representing the group welcomed the decision, stating that they remain committed to pursuing justice and safeguarding the rights of polling agents and other election participants.

The matter is expected to return to court at a later date as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
