Muwanga Kivumbi faces jail following arrest by Uganda Police

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the legislator for Butambala county over allegations of political violence.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, police confirmed Muwanga Kivumbi’s arrest and said he will be arraigned in court to face different charges in relation to violence which happened in Butambala last week.

“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of the Butambala County legislator, Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi. He is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before the court in due course.

His arrest is in connection with recent incidents of political violence in Butambala.

Muwanga Kivumbi lost to Eriasa Mukiibi in hotly contested elections in Butambala constituency.

However, on voting day, there was political violence in the constituency which led to death of lives and destruction of property. In his speech after his election, President Yoweri Museveni linked the Butambala violence to terrorism.

Muwanga Kivumbi was arrested on Thursday morning at his home in Buwate.
