Magic Washington Claims No African Producer Matches His Skill

Magic Washington made a bold proclamation about his legacy and unmatched influence on the continent’s sound.

Speaking in a candid interview on NRG Radio, the veteran hitmaker confidently declared:

“There’s no artist or producer in Africa who can come close to what I do, except South Africans.”

Known for his groundbreaking work that helped define Uganda’s soundscape over the past two decades, Magic Washington’s statement was not just about self-praise — it was a reflection on a career that has shaped East African music from the ground up.

From Kampala to Nairobi and beyond, Magic Washington’s fingerprints are all over some of the region’s most iconic tracks.

His production style, both melodic and rooted in African rhythms, has been the backbone of countless chart-toppers.

Many of today’s producers, especially from Nigeria, he claims, are echoing the foundations he laid years ago.

“All these existing Nigerian producers are doing what I did,” he said. “But South Africans, their sound is remarkable — they challenged me with their Amapiano.”

While asserting his dominance, Washington also gave credit where it was due. He singled out South Africa’s Amapiano movement as a creative force that genuinely pushed him to evolve as a producer.

Calling it “innovative” and “a sound that truly tested” his skills, he praised the genre’s boldness and originality — something he says is rare to find elsewhere on the continent.
