KISANGANI-DRC: The March 23 Movement (M23) has claimed responsibility for a drone attack targeting Kisangani International Airport, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the rebel group said the strike was aimed at military facilities within the airport compound, alleging that government forces were using the site to coordinate aerial and ground operations against M23-held areas.
Congolese authorities had not immediately confirmed the extent of the damage or whether there were casualties.
However, security sources indicated that investigations were underway to assess the impact of the alleged strike.
Kisangani, a key commercial hub located along the Congo River, has largely remained outside the main theatres of fighting centered in North Kivu province.
The reported drone attack, if verified, could signal a widening of hostilities beyond the traditional conflict zones.
The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have intensified operations against M23 in recent months amid renewed clashes that have displaced thousands of civilians.
Regional diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire have so far yielded limited results.
Security analysts warn that the growing use of drone technology by armed actors could further complicate the security landscape and threaten critical infrastructure in major urban centers.
Authorities are expected to issue an official statement once assessments at the airport are completed.
