Gracious Kadondi has been elected Guild President of Makerere University, emerging as the winner in a competitive race that drew widespread attention across the country.

Kadondi, who was supported by the National Unity Platform (NUP), secured 6,801 votes, beating her closest challenger, Hannah Karema Tumukunde, who polled 5,787 votes.

The election, which featured several candidates, was marked by high voter turnout and intense campaigning, with student groups actively mobilising support in the days leading up to the vote.

Shortly after the official declaration, celebrations erupted among Kadondi’s supporters, with chants and gatherings reported in different parts of the university.

The electoral process was conducted under tight security, ensuring calm throughout the exercise.

Kadondi’s victory reinforces the continued strength of NUP-aligned leadership within student politics at Makerere, a trend

Analysts often view outcomes at the university as reflective of broader youth political leanings in Uganda.

As she assumes office, Kadondi is expected to steer the student leadership agenda, focusing on key issues such as student welfare, academic concerns, and engagement with university authorities.

She succeeds James Churchill Ssentamu, taking over one of the most influential student leadership positions in the country.

Her election adds to the growing profile of young leaders shaping political discourse, both within academic institutions and on the national stage.
