The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala, has ordered the arrest of an enrolled nurse at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital following allegations of negligence involving a critically ill patient.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Tumuheki Nicholas, was arrested on the IGG’s directive during an impromptu inspection of the hospital. The visit marked the beginning of the IGG’s regional office tour, which commenced with the IGG Kabale Regional Office.

Allegations of Neglect

Preliminary findings indicate that Tumuheki allegedly failed to provide urgent medical attention to a patient who had been referred from Kamwezi Health Centre IV while in critical condition and bleeding heavily.

According to reports, the nurse instructed the patient’s caregiver to place the patient on the floor, claiming the hospital had not been notified in advance to prepare a bed.

Further allegations state that the caregiver was told to purchase medicines from a nearby private pharmacy after being informed that the hospital had no drugs in stock. However, the medicines reportedly were never administered to the patient.

Victim’s Account

In an emotional account, the patient’s relative narrated the ordeal and the delay in receiving care.

“My brother was in a very bad condition. We were referred here by ambulance in the morning at around 8am, but no doctor came to attend to him when we arrived.”

The caregiver said they were forced to remove the patient from the ambulance themselves before taking him inside the facility.

“There was no bed. The doctor asked why we had come without informing the hospital so they could prepare a bed. We were told to put the patient down on the cement floor, and he stayed there for about 30 minutes without any help.”

He added that they were later instructed to buy medicines outside the hospital.

“We were told there was no medicine in the hospital and directed to a nearby pharmacy to buy drugs. All the medicine that was used came from outside, not the hospital.”

Investigations Ongoing

The IGG’s office says investigations into the incident are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged negligence and whether more health workers were involved.

Authorities say appropriate administrative and legal action will be taken based on the findings.
