Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Deputy Commander Land Forces, Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, has died, according to reports published by Daily Monitor citing security sources.

The senior military officer is said to have been unwell for some time prior to his death, although the UPDF had not yet issued a detailed official statement by the time of publication.

Maj Gen Takirwa was among the top commanders within the UPDF hierarchy, serving in a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing land force operations and supporting the strategic direction of the army’s ground units.

His death leaves a significant gap in the command structure at a time when the military continues to play an active role in national security and regional missions.

During his military career, Takirwa held several influential positions.

He previously served as Commander of the UPDF Second Division based in Mbarara, where he oversaw security operations across western Uganda and contributed to maintaining stability in the region.

Colleagues often described him as a disciplined and experienced officer who dedicated many years to military service.

Sources within the security establishment say his passing has sent shockwaves through the military fraternity, with tributes expected from fellow officers, government officials, and members of the public who worked with him over the years.

His leadership was particularly noted during periods of operational coordination and internal security management.

The UPDF is expected to provide more details regarding the circumstances of his death, funeral arrangements, and official military honours in the coming days.

Information on succession plans within the land forces command structure is also anticipated once the army releases a formal statement.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more verified information becomes available.
