The Ministry of Education and Sports has shifted the reopening of all schools and education institutions to Tuesday, February 10, 2026, citing the need to protect learners and staff following the General Elections. The earlier reopening date had been set for February 2.
In a statement issued on January 16, the ministry said the adjustment was made after consultations on security and logistical concerns arising from the post-election period.
The directive applies to all institutions, including nursery, primary, secondary, international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.
“Due to the General Elections and in order to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, 10th February 2026,” said Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary.
The ministry also confirmed that Term One of the 2026 academic year will run from February 10 to May 1, 2026, urging administrators to follow the approved calendar strictly.
“All school administrators must adhere firmly to these dates and the approved school calendar published on the Ministry website,” Turyagyenda added.
Parents, guardians, and school managers were advised to adjust their plans to align with the revised schedule.
The change ensures a safer start for learners immediately after the electoral period and reinforces the government’s commitment to maintaining continuity in education.
