Christopher Okello Onyu, 34, from Nwoya district, paid admission fees for his child at Gaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Kampala before launching a brutal knife attack that killed four young children.
Police arrested him after dispersing an angry mob, with investigations ongoing into his motive.
A shocking incident unfolded at Gaba Early Childhood Development Programme Centre in Ggaba, Kampala, where 34-year-old Christopher Okello Onyu from Nwoya district hacked four toddlers to death.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala revealed that Onyu had visited the school two days prior to inquire about admitting his own child. On Thursday, he returned, paid the Shs 180,000 fee, then turned violent.
Pretending to leave, Onyu headed to the seesaw area where 14 children were playing. Armed with three knives, he attacked the group, killing three boys—Gideon Eteku (2), Ignatius Sserwange (3), and Ryan Odeke (2)—and one girl, Kaise Alungat (2).
The victims’ bodies were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortems and later released to families. Onyu is now held at Kabalagala Police Division.
Police and army personnel fired warning shots to save the suspect from a mob seeking justice. Makindye deputy RDC Mark Bayingana raised concerns over security lapses that allowed Onyu undetected access.
Parents of surviving children, like Karim Kazibwe, expressed devastation, noting more deaths could have occurred. School administrator Stanley Okecho confirmed full cooperation with police and a temporary closure.
Inspector General of Police Abass Byakagaba urged calm during the probe. Reports indicate Onyu threatened more attacks even if killed.
