The Electoral Commission has declared Fiona Nakku as the newly elected Female Workers’ Member of Parliament for the 12th Parliament, after a fiercely contested election against NRM’s Agnes Kunihira.

The election, held on 19th January 2026 at Kibuli Secondary School, saw Nakku secure 290 votes, narrowly defeating Kunihira, who received 287 votes—just a 3-vote margin.

A total of 630 worker delegates, drawn from various unions, made up the Electoral College that elected their representative.

Nakku, an independent candidate with NRM leanings, campaigned under the symbol of a table. She pledged to advocate for inclusive workers’ rights, particularly focusing on the issue of labour casualisation, with the goal of ensuring that casual workers receive fairer pay and better working conditions.

In her victory speech, Nakku expressed gratitude to her supporters, including prominent worker leaders such as Hon. Arinaitwe Rwakajara and former NOTU Chairman General Wilson Usher Owere, whose mentorship and technical support played a key role in her success over the incumbent NRM flag-bearer.

She also called on her opponents to join forces with her in advocating for the interests of the labour movement in Uganda. Nakku emphasised the need to strengthen the movement for a better future, highlighting the importance of extensive lobbying by all stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes.
