In a surprising turn of events, Derrick Nyeko, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Makindye East, has announced that he will not contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Sharing the news on his official X account, Nyeko expressed heartfelt appreciation to his supporters, campaign team, and constituents for their unwavering trust and encouragement throughout his tenure.
“It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” he wrote.
Nyeko acknowledged that the decision might disappoint some supporters who had hoped he would defend his seat.
However, he explained that after careful reflection, he chose to step aside in the interest of unity and continued service to the people of Makindye East.
“This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved. It is my hope that the spirit of unity, resilience, and service to our people will remain stronger than ever,” he added.
Known for his outspoken advocacy in Parliament, Nyeko also highlighted his clean track record, stating, “I have remained a man of no corruption, no problems.”
With Nyeko stepping down, the race for Makindye East is now wide open, setting the stage for new contenders to emerge as parties prepare for the elections.
