Court Rejects Bid to Treat Besigye Outside Luzira Prison

The High Court has declined to order the transfer of Col (Rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye from Luzira Upper Prison to an external medical facility, despite claims that his health is deteriorating.

Justice Emmanuel Baguma said the court had received communication from prison authorities indicating that Besigye was unwell, but noted that there was no sufficient evidence to show that his condition could not be managed within the prison health system.

Besigye and his co-accused Obeid Lutale were absent from court, prompting state prosecutors to request a video link to confirm his condition. The application was, however, opposed by defence lawyers led by Erias Lukwago, who argued that Besigye was too weak to participate even virtually.

Outside the court, Besigye’s wife Winnie Byanyima said her husband had been rushed for treatment after falling seriously ill.

“He started with severe stomach pain and later developed a fever. When I reached, I found him on IV, and he told me he could not walk and had to be wheeled in,” Byanyima said.

In his ruling, Justice Baguma said the court would wait for further updates from prison authorities before making any decision on his transfer.

The case was adjourned for three weeks due to the absence of the accused persons.
