The Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court has charged the National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Buganda and Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi with terrorism.

The legislator was produced before the court on Friday and charged with terrorism, contrary to Section 6(1)(a) and Section 3(o) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Cap 120, following his arrest on Thursday.

The Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Rachael Bikhole, told the court that Kivumbi, along with others, at large between January 11 and January 17, 2026, coordinated and carried out a series of violent attacks in Kibibi Town Council and Gombe Town Council in Butambala District.

Kivumbi has been sent on remand until February 03rd for mention of the case. The legislator’s arrest and arraignment before the court follow recent incidents of political violence in the Butambala district, which the Police and President Museveni alleged he is connected to.

While receiving the official declaration of presidential election results at Rwakitura on Sunday, President Yoweri Museveni accused the members of the National Unity Platform of planning to carry out violence after losing the elections.

“In Butambala, a character called Kivumbi was defeated. Then they planned that where NUP is defeated, gangs with pangas should attack the polling station”, he said.

Museveni alleged that attackers armed with pangas attempted to carry out assaults in the district, prompting a security response in which seven suspected attackers were shot dead.
He further revealed that security agencies had received intelligence suggesting that similar attacks were planned in other parts of the country.

However, he said the situation was contained after some opposition members reportedly declined to take part and instead alerted him during a meeting at State Lodge Nakasero on January 13.

However, in a video recording shared earlier this week, Kivumbi refuted both allegations and accused security forces of storming his home in the dead of night following Thursday’s general elections and shooting dead several members of his campaign team.

“They were killed inside my house, and I was the target. They were shot dead inside that house; they weren’t even on the road. They were looking for me,” Kivumbi said,

Kivumbi noted that the incident happened as vote tallying was ongoing at the district tally centre and security personnel raided his residence, forcing many people to flee for safety.

A video recorded the following morning reportedly shows bullet holes in the doors and walls of Muwanga Kivumbi’s house.
