Veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has thrown his weight behind National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, by sending a financial contribution to support his campaign as it enters its final stages.
Besigye’s support was revealed on Sunday when opposition leaders, activists and supporters gathered at his Kasangati home for a special prayer meeting held in solidarity with him and other individuals they describe as political prisoners.
The monetary contribution, whose amount was not disclosed, was delivered by Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, during the prayer gathering.
Addressing those present, Byanyima said she conveyed a special message from Besigye following a visit to him in detention last week.
“While he is in prison, he is not earning anything, but he has friends. Among those friends, he fundraised and said we should get this money and give it to you to support the last push of the campaign,” Byanyima said.
She thanked opposition supporters for standing with Besigye and other detainees, describing the prayer meeting as a symbol of unity and resilience.
Receiving the contribution, Bobi Wine praised Besigye for the gesture, saying it had given hope not only to his campaign but also to other political prisoners.
“We are grateful to Dr Kizza Besigye for sending us a message of encouragement and hope. Despite being in prison, he sent us a generous financial contribution towards the last lap of our campaigns. For this, we’re very grateful,” Kyagulanyi said.
He also commended the families of political prisoners for their continued courage and pressure on authorities.
“I appreciate the families of the political prisoners for being very resilient and for doing everything possible to keep pressuring the regime to free their people. In unity, we shall overcome every obstacle on our path to freedom,” he added.
The Kasangati prayer meeting doubled as a strong show of opposition solidarity, underscoring growing unity behind Bobi Wine’s campaign and renewed calls for the release of political detainees.
