On Wednesday, November 04, the accused persons appeared in court for mention of case, and the state prosecutor informed the court that the state had conducted investigations.

Their report followed an inquiry by Senior Magistrate Edgar Karakire, who asked Grace Mariam Akite, the prosecutor, as to why the accused have not been committed to a High Court trial.

In response, Akite informed the court that investigations are complete.

“Your Worship, investigations are complete. We are preparing committal papers and will be ready on the next adjournment,” Akite told court.

The magistrate consequently adjourned the case to December 8, 2026, when committal papers are expected to be presented to court.

The accused are Obed Mugwisa, a boda boda rider; Elly Mondoni, a delivery agent with Medicinal Pharmacy; Joseph Owino, a private security guard; Henry Kabugo, a boda boda rider; and Jetehro Rugaba, a driver.

They are charged with Monica Athieno, 24, a merchandiser and resident of Bbiina zone in Nakawa, Kampala district.

The case

Prosecution alleges that the accused persons and others still at large, on June 5, 2026, at Naguru Upper East Road in Kampala district, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of Gongodyo Sydney Gyabi.

Gongodyo was a national Rugby player who was killed by a mob after being accused of handbag snatching.

In the video that circulated on social media, the mob stoned Gongodyo with stones and wood while others were calling him a thief.

Murder is contrary to sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code, Cap. 128, and upon conviction, the offender suffers death.
