Police in Bukedi South have arrested 11 suspects in an operation targeting butcheries allegedly linked to livestock theft and the sale of uninspected meat.
The operation was carried out on Monday in Arubaina, Sofia, Nangwe, Solo B and Busia Main Market in Busia Municipality.
A multi-agency team led by the Busia Municipality Veterinary Officer conducted the raids following investigations into suspected stolen livestock being channelled into butcheries.
The investigation had previously involved sniffer dogs, which identified premises suspected of handling meat from stolen animals. Police said some operators abandoned their butcheries after noticing the dogs.
During the operation, authorities recovered unstamped meat from goats and cattle, as well as turkey and chicken products.
Weighing scales, stones, pangas and other items were also seized.
The suspects were taken to Busia Central Police Station, where they were processed and charged with stealing cattle.
The Flying Squad participated in the operation as police continued investigations into a suspected livestock theft racket involving butcher operators in Busia Town.
