Abdul Malik, better known as freestyle dancer LIKDUL, has made history as Uganda’s first-ever Red Bull Dance Your Style champion after defeating MICO Styles in a high-energy national final at Motiv, Kampala, over the weekend.
The victory capped a night that placed Uganda’s dance culture at the centre of the country’s entertainment scene, bringing together dancers, musicians, celebrities, creatives and hundreds of dance enthusiasts.
But unlike conventional dance competitions, Red Bull Dance Your Style has a different kind of judge — the crowd.
The competition is built around freestyle, unpredictability and personality, with dancers battling one-on-one across different styles while responding to unexpected music and attempting to convince the audience that they deserve to advance.
There are no rehearsed routines to fall back on. Every song brings a new challenge, forcing dancers to rely on their musicality, creativity and ability to connect with the audience in real time.
When the competition reached its decisive stages, LIKDUL had done enough to win over the crowd.
Four dancers — LIKDUL, MICO Styles, KiiNESIS and PEZZ MUSTAFA — made it to the semi-finals, setting up two intense battles for a place in the championship round.
LIKDUL and MICO Styles eventually emerged as the final two, turning the last battle into a contest of musicality, creativity, confidence and crowd appeal.
When the votes were counted, LIKDUL had the edge.
The victory makes him the first Ugandan to claim the Red Bull Dance Your Style title, earning him more than a national trophy. He will now take Uganda’s dance culture onto an international stage.
LIKDUL will represent Uganda at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Zurich, Switzerland, this October, where he will compete against national champions from around the world.
The opportunity comes at a time when Uganda’s street-dance community continues to grow beyond informal dance spaces and into major entertainment platforms.
For LIKDUL, however, the challenge now shifts from winning over a Kampala crowd to convincing a global audience.
The national final also doubled as a celebration of Uganda’s wider creative scene, with performances from Big Trill and Urban Dance Crew, Ava Peace and Thee Boys, MPERE, Paul Selah and Crew, and STKA Boys entertaining the crowd between the dance battles.
After the competition, Karole Kasita took the stage for the after-party before DJ Vans closed out the night.
The Kampala final was the culmination of a campaign that had taken the competition to different parts of the city, including activations at Makerere University and MUBS.
The Kampala qualifier was held at Somewhere Else on August 28, followed by a dance workshop led by Verb on August 29.
For LIKDUL, the journey now moves beyond Uganda. The first-ever national title has opened the door to a much bigger stage — one where he will be dancing not only for a Ugandan crowd, but alongside some of the world’s best freestyle dancers.
