The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party on Tuesday launched the nomination process for parliamentary aspirants, with consensus-building and vetting set to take place tomorrow, Wednesday, June 18, 2025. These activities are part of the party’s preparations for its internal primaries, scheduled to run from July 2 to July 12, 2025.
The opposition party’s electoral commission has begun receiving nominations from members intending to contest for various positions, including Member of Parliament, district chairperson, city mayor, and others, ahead of the 2026 general elections. The exercise is being conducted at the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi.
According to Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, chairperson of the FDC Electoral Commission, the nomination process has been decentralised to ensure efficiency, with district supervisors overseeing the collection and return of nomination forms.
The nomination process comes in the wake of the party’s recent presidential nominations, which saw Patrick Oboi Amuriat and Nathan Nandala Mafabi emerge as contenders. Both candidates are currently conducting joint campaigns involving indoor meetings and mobilisation activities. The campaigns will culminate in a national delegates’ conference on July 31, 2025, where the party’s flag bearer for the 2026 presidential elections will be officially selected.
Speaking to the media, FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo noted that people often join political parties for different reasons, including perceived electoral strength in certain regions.
“A good number of people join a particular party because they believe it gives them a better chance of being elected,” Kikonyogo said. “Some switch parties when they see opportunities elsewhere. We can’t force anyone to stay, but people must work with the political realities on the ground.”
The nomination exercise is unfolding amid ongoing fallout from the FDC’s internal divisions, which led to a major split and the formation of a new political outfit, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
