Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua has been denied entry into Uganda at Entebbe International Airport and ordered to return to Kenya without being given any official reason, according to reports.
Karua had travelled to Uganda on Monday to join the legal team representing Erias Lukwago at a bail hearing at the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court.
However, while her colleagues were allowed entry, she was reportedly turned away at the airport and instructed to fly back.
The veteran lawyer is also part of the defence team for opposition politician Kizza Besigye in the ongoing treason case.
Her denial of entry has raised concern among legal and human rights circles, with the Uganda Law Society calling for clarification from authorities over the circumstances surrounding the decision.
Meanwhile, Erias Lukwago has appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court for a ruling on his bail application.
He is facing charges of misprision of treason linked to allegations involving his clients, including Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale.
