The Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, says the government is now waiting for the Electoral Commission to announce the dates for the LC I, LC II, and Women Council elections, following Parliament’s approval of funding for the exercise.

On Tuesday, 5th April 2026, Parliament passed a supplementary budget of 1.1 trillion shillings, allocating 56.9 billion shillings specifically for the upcoming local elections.

The term of LC I chairpersons expired in July 2023, and since then, Minister Magyezi has repeatedly extended their tenure using ministerial powers.

Speaking to the media at Parliament, Magyezi said the Ministry of Local Government has completed its preparations, and the next step now rests with the Electoral Commission.

He also defended the 56.9 billion shillings allocation, explaining that even though the elections will be conducted through lining up, the commission still needs funds to gazette electoral areas and support officials overseeing the exercise.
