A legal challenge has been filed contesting the election of Security Minister Jim Muhwezi as Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, setting the stage for a high-stakes court battle.
The petition, lodged at the High Court in Rukungiri by rival candidate Fred Turyamuhweza, seeks to nullify the election results announced after the January 2026 polls.
Turyamuhweza, who ran under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), narrowly lost to Muhwezi in a tightly contested race.
According to the petition, Muhwezi’s victory was allegedly marred by irregularities and breaches of electoral laws, which the petitioner argues substantially affected the final outcome.
The suit also faults the Electoral Commission for what it describes as procedural failures in managing the election.
Relief sought
Turyamuhweza is asking the court to:
Declare the election results null and void
Remove Muhwezi from office as Member of Parliament
Order a fresh parliamentary election in Rujumbura County
Legal process underway
Court officials confirmed that the case has been received and is awaiting hearing, with both parties expected to present evidence and witnesses. Muhwezi has since filed a response to the allegations, signaling his intent to defend the outcome of the election.
Political implications
The case adds to a growing list of post-election petitions following Uganda’s 2026 general elections, highlighting continued tensions over electoral transparency and accountability.
A ruling in favor of the petitioner could trigger a by-election in the constituency, while a dismissal would reaffirm Muhwezi’s position and strengthen his political standing within government.
The outcome is expected to draw national attention, given Muhwezi’s senior role in government and his long-standing presence in Uganda’s political landscape.
