Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has defended the performance of the 11th Parliament under his tenure with Speaker Among, welcoming the endorsement by President Museveni and urging MPs to maintain party unity ahead of the leadership vote.

Addressing journalists at his home in Kigo, Wakiso District, Tayebwa cited improvements in representation, legislation, oversight, and appropriation as justification for his and Among’s retention.

“Most of the issues where people wanted to judge us are outside the core mandate,” he said, pointing to enhanced appropriations and the passage of key laws.

Tayebwa appealed to colleagues within the NRM to respect the party’s official position, acknowledging the rights of MPs who may wish to contest but stressing the importance of unity.

He added, “I have a strong conviction that it is NRM that will produce the Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” and emphasised the need for cooperation between the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to deliver on the party’s mandate.
