Operations at Muwema & Co. Advocates were disrupted on Friday after the firm was evicted from its rented offices in Kololo over alleged rent arrears totalling USD 372,300 (about UGX 1.34 billion).

The property owner, Downtown Investments Ltd, reportedly instructed court bailiffs to repossess the premises after months of unpaid rent.

The eviction exercise saw enforcement officers and security personnel deployed at the building to oversee the process, as the landlord regained control of the property. Office items belonging to the law firm were reportedly moved out as part of the enforcement procedure.

Sources indicate that the rent arrears accumulated over an extended period, forcing the landlord to pursue legal channels to recover the debt and reclaim the property.

Located in Kololo, one of the most sought-after commercial areas in Kampala, the premises had served as the firm’s operational base for several years.

The development has drawn attention in Uganda’s legal fraternity, given the prominence of the firm in handling major legal matters and representing high-profile clients.

Officials from the law firm had not released a formal response by the time of publication.
