KAMPALA: The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued a stern warning to motorists against paying money to criminals who steal vehicle number plates and later demand bribes for their return.

According to the Ministry, a growing criminal scheme involves thieves removing number plates from parked vehicles and contacting owners with instructions to send mobile money in exchange for information about where the plates have been hidden.

Officials say this practice not only encourages crime but also exposes victims to further exploitation.

Motorists who fall victim to number plate theft have been advised to immediately report the incident to the nearest police station and begin the lawful process of acquiring duplicate plates.

“The public should not negotiate with criminals. Follow the official procedures and protect yourself legally,” the Ministry emphasized.

The Ministry further warned that stolen number plates are sometimes used in criminal activities, including robberies and traffic violations, potentially implicating unsuspecting vehicle owners if the matter is not promptly reported.

Working alongside the Uganda Police Force, authorities say they are intensifying operations to track down those behind the racket.

Motorists are encouraged to park in secure areas and remain vigilant, particularly in busy urban centers where such thefts have been reported.
