NRM CEC Backs Anita Among, Tayebwa to Retain Parliamentary Leadership

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially backed Speaker Anita Annet Among and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, to retain their top positions in Parliament.

The party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) made the decision during a meeting held on Tuesday at State House, Entebbe, giving Among the green light to continue as Speaker and endorsing Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker.

Among has been Speaker of Parliament since 2022 and also represents Bukedea District as the Woman Member of Parliament. She succeeded Jacob Oulanyah, who died in March 2022 while receiving treatment in the United States. Tayebwa, who serves as Deputy Speaker, is also the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North.

Both leaders have had smooth paths in recent electoral processes. In July, they were declared unopposed in the NRM primary elections.

Later, in October 2025, they were again returned unopposed as candidates for their respective parliamentary seats—Among in Bukedea District and Tayebwa in Ruhinda North.

Despite their unchallenged nominations, the process sparked controversy. Opposition parties protested the exercise, accusing the Electoral Commission of unfairly blocking their candidates.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flagbearer, Susan Norma Okedi, and National Unity Platform (NUP) aspirant, Florence Asio, claimed that opposition contenders were deliberately sidelined and denied a fair chance to participate.
