President Museveni has been re-elected president of Uganda after winning the January 15 presidential election, according to results released by the Electoral Commission.
Announcing the final tally, Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said Museveni secured 7,944,772 votes, equivalent to 71.65 per cent of the valid votes cast nationwide.
Justice Byabakama noted that 11,366,201 voters took part in the election, putting national voter turnout at 52.5 per cent.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, finished second after polling 2,741,238 votes, representing 24.72 per cent of the total vote.
Museveni’s victory extends his grip on power and ushers him into another five-year term, further cementing his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
While the ruling party has hailed the outcome as a clear endorsement by voters, opposition leaders have rejected the results, citing alleged irregularities during the electoral process.
