Events promoter Mariam Mutakubwa, widely known as Biggie Events, has been released from Luzira prison after spending a week on remand following a long running dispute over a loan worth Shs70 million.

Biggie is said to have secured the loan from David Tumusiime Amooti, intending to inject the funds into one of her major events. However, when she failed to repay the money within the agreed timelines, Tumusiime reportedly turned to loan sharks to help trace her. She was later found in downtown Kampala, arrested, and arraigned in court, which resulted in a six-month sentence at Luzira.

Her imprisonment sparked solidarity within the entertainment industry, with several prominent figures—including singers Spice Diana and Ameria Nambala—stepping forward to support her. The artistes, together with fellow promoters, mobilised funds and held negotiations with the lender. An agreement was eventually reached, and part of the outstanding amount was settled, paving the way for Biggie’s release on Wednesday evening.

Upon regaining her freedom, Biggie expressed deep appreciation to everyone who rallied behind her during what she described as one of the most difficult moments of her career.

“I am grateful to the promoters, artistes, my family, and all my supporters who stood by me. Your love and support kept me strong,” she said.

Her release has since sparked discussions in the entertainment fraternity about financial pressures within the events industry and the rising reliance on high-interest informal loans.
