Police in Kyotera District have arrested a man identified as Amwine Mike on charges of obtaining money under false pretences and personation.
According to police, Amwine was found soliciting money from unsuspecting applicants seeking to join the Special Police Constables (SPCs), demanding UGX 50,000 from each applicant in exchange for “smooth entry” into the recruitment process as polling constables.
In a statement released on Saturday, police condemned the fraudulent scheme, warning the public against falling prey to such scams.
“The recruitment process for SPCs is strictly based on merit, and as such, no applicant should ever be asked to pay money to secure a position,” police stated.
Authorities further urged members of the public to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities or cases of extortion to the nearest police station.
The arrest comes days after the Uganda Police Force (UPF) announced a nationwide recruitment drive for 100,000 Election Special Police Constables to support the Force in maintaining security during the forthcoming 2026 General Elections.
According to a statement issued by AIGP Jesse Kamunanwire, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, the temporary officers will be recruited on a three-month contract and will each earn a monthly remuneration of UGX 469,000.
The recruitment, which runs until November 1, 2025, is aimed at strengthening the Police’s operational capacity and ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process across all districts.
Applicants must be Ugandan citizens aged 18 years and above, possess a National ID, and have at least a Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) result slip. Candidates are also required to demonstrate good conduct, have no criminal record, and be physically fit.
The Police have repeatedly cautioned against bribery, impersonation, or the presentation of forged documents, emphasizing that such offences will result in arrest and prosecution.
