Social-political commentator and self-proclaimed businessman Frank Gashumba has alleged that the ongoing vetting process within the NUP is turning into a profitable venture for the top officials at the Makerere Kavule party.

Speaking on Radio 4, Gashumba compared NUP’s method of selecting candidates to the recent NRM CEC elections held in Kololo.

He stated that the primary distinction is that while billions were in play for the NRM, millions are involved for NUP. To support his claims, he mentioned that he funded two individuals vying for different positions, both of whom received party tickets.

“This party has not conducted a fair and transparent process for choosing candidates for various positions. It was simply a money-making operation. Just as NRM distributed billions in Kololo, NUP was raking in millions. I have helped two individuals financially.

One was aiming for a lord councillor position in Kampala, and he told me he was asked for 5 million Shillings, but only had 4, so I gave him the remaining 1 million Shillings,” Gashumba explained.

He further expressed his hope that God grants President Museveni more years in power because he believes that Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, would be a far worse leader.

It is worth noting that Gashumba has long criticised NUP, referring to it as an extension of NRM created to undermine FDC and Dr. Col. Kiiza Besigye.

The Bobi Wine-led party has faced numerous allegations of bribery, corruption, and favouritism in its current candidate selection process for various elective positions.
