The police in Busoga East have launched investigations into a daring escape in which seven suspects fled from court cells at the Mayuge Magisterial area in Katwe Zone, Mayuge district.

The fugitives include Juma Swamakomu, Jamali Elapasi, Ryan Tenywa, Hussein Isabirye, and Abdul Mukambwe, all facing charges of housebreaking, malicious damage, and aggravated robbery.

Two others, Juma Mugoya and Fred Kaneene, were awaiting trial for aggravated defilement. According to a statement recorded by court supervisor Abdullah Igulwa, the incident occurred on August 29.

Igulwa explained that at the time of the escape, both the grade one and chief magistrates had gone out for public hearings on land matters. All security personnel attached to the court reportedly moved with the magistrates, leaving the premises unguarded.

“The suspects took advantage of the lapse in security and slipped away unnoticed,” Igulwa said.

Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the incident and revealed that security agencies are working with commanders in neighbouring islands, including Jaguzi, Sigulu, and Dolwe, where the escapees are suspected to be hiding.

Kafayo warned that the fugitives will face additional charges of escape from lawful custody once re-arrested. He also appealed to the public, especially relatives of the suspects, to provide intelligence that could aid in their capture.

“The continued stay of these suspects in the community poses a risk of mob action from their victims. We urge the public to cooperate with security forces,” Kafayo said.
