Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been elected as the interim President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), a political coalition advocating for democratic reforms and civil liberties in Uganda.

His appointment is set to last for a transitional period of two years, during which the party will focus on grassroots mobilization, institutional development, and preparing for the 2026 general elections.

The announcement was made during the PFF’s national delegates’ conference held in Kampala on Monday, where prominent opposition figures reaffirmed their commitment to a united political front.

In the new leadership structure, Hon. Dr. Lulume Bayiga, the Member of Parliament for Buikwe South, was named Deputy President for the Buganda region.

Dr. Bayiga, a seasoned politician and vocal advocate for constitutionalism, is expected to play a key role in coordinating regional mobilization and outreach.

Meanwhile, Hon. Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda, MP for Kira Municipality and former Opposition Chief Whip, has been appointed as the Secretary General of the party.

Known for his articulate voice in Parliament and sharp critiques of government excesses, Ssemujju will oversee the party’s strategic operations, policy direction, and organizational management.

In his acceptance speech, Lukwago expressed gratitude for the confidence entrusted in him and vowed to build a “formidable, inclusive, and principled opposition movement.”

He emphasized the need for unity among pro-democracy forces and called on Ugandans to resist authoritarianism through peaceful and lawful means.
