The Speaker of Parliament and National Resistance Movement (NRM) 2nd National Vice Chairperson, Anita Annet Among, on Wednesday morning, received a delegation of independent Members of Parliament interested in forging a cooperation agreement with the ruling party.

The meeting took place at the NRM Secretariat on Kyadondo Road in Nakasero.

During the meeting, Among revealed that independent MPs who express willingness to ally with the National Resistance Movement will be invited to the upcoming Kyankwanzi Retreat, scheduled for April 7, 2026.

“During this retreat, we will officially welcome them and formally introduce those who have signed to work with the party,” she said.

Among further disclosed that out of 69 independent MPs, 62 have indicated interest in aligning with the NRM in the 12th Parliament, describing the development as a significant boost to the party’s numbers.

“Something worth celebrating because it adds to our already big numbers,” she said.

She added that Parliament is ready to integrate the independents, including assigning them roles both within the party structures and in parliamentary business.

“As Parliament, we are ready to work with the independents and give them assignments both from the party and from Parliament,” she noted.

The NRM Director of Legal Affairs, Counsel Enoch Barata, welcomed the MPs who have committed to advancing development in their constituencies while contributing to the party’s broader agenda.

Meanwhile, the NRM Director of Communication, Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, described the move as a strong signal of the party’s continued growth and appeal among elected leaders.

The development underscores shifting political alignments ahead of the new parliamentary term, with the ruling party consolidating support from independent legislators across Uganda.
