President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasised the need to prioritise efficient transport systems, noting that heavy cargo such as petroleum products should increasingly be moved from roads to pipelines and railways in order to preserve road infrastructure for passengers and light cargo.
The President stressed that roads must be maintained at all times to support mobility, trade and service delivery across the country.
He reiterated that Uganda’s socio-economic transformation agenda is aimed at ensuring prosperity for individuals, families and enterprises through wealth creation and job generation.
He noted that those who embrace the development message are steadily becoming active participants in the money economy.
President Museveni further underscored the importance of market expansion beyond domestic boundaries, stating that internal markets alone are not sufficient to sustain large-scale economic growth.
He highlighted the need for regional, East African and continental integration to widen opportunities for production and trade.
Comparing global economic realities, the President observed that even large economies such as China and India rely on vast external markets, reinforcing the importance of integration for Uganda’s growth.
He called for renewed discipline in national development efforts, emphasising “no more sleep” as a call for urgency and performance in service delivery and implementation of government programmes.
The President further warned against corruption, non-performance, politeness to failure, and leadership driven by ego and personal interest, stressing that these practices undermine national progress.
He highlighted Uganda’s ongoing economic transformation, noting significant expansion and diversification across key sectors including agriculture, industry, services and ICT.
He cited growth in exports such as coffee, milk, fish, sugar, cement and bananas, as well as increased industrial output.
The President also pointed to improvements in electricity generation and ongoing investments aimed at strengthening capacity to support industrialisation.
He noted progress under programmes such as the Parish Development Model, which is integrating millions of households into the money economy through production and enterprise support.
However, he emphasised the need for accountability to ensure that public resources reach intended beneficiaries and deliver tangible results.
He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to rural transformation, productivity and inclusive growth, calling for discipline, transparency and focus in implementing national programmes. #SONA26
